How To Handle Arthritis This Winter

Categories: Arthritis / Pain Management

Many people who suffer from arthritis complain that it will flare up during rainy or cold weather. Therefore, winter isn’t always a fun time for those who have the condition. Throughout the winter months it is very true that your arthritis can be considerably more painful. In order to better cope with the pain management, here are some suggestions you can take.

1. Dress Warm to Limit Arthritis Pain

This may seem like a “given” for anyone during Winter. However, dressing in warm clothes is particularly helpful to those with arthritis. Make sure that you are always wearing your coat when you go outside. Protecting yourself with layers of clothing is a great way to make sure your body stays warm. If your home or office gets too hot, you will have the option to remove a layer so you don’t get too hot. Being prepared for any type of weather will be helpful in managing your pain more effectively.

2. Protect Your Extremities

Your extremities are particularly susceptible to the pain-inducing effects of cold weather. It is very important that you protect them. When outdoors be sure to wear gloves, hats, and scarves to protect your hands, head, and neck.

3. Exercise for Arthritis Relief

Having an exercise plan in place for your arthritis treatment is extremely important. There are many easy yet effective exercises you can take up that will help with pain management. Swimming in a warm pool is always a great way to keep you pain free. Also consider walks around the neighborhood to warm you up, in layered clothing of course!

4. Stay Dry

Wet clothing can have seriously negative effects on arthritis. After being out in a rainy day, make sure that you change your clothes as soon as you get home. If you get your shoes wet, be sure to remove them and put on some dry socks. Be sure to dry your shoes out as thoroughly as possible after getting them wet.

5. Be on Top of Your Medication

Winter is not the time to be lax about taking any of your arthritis medication. It is important that you are as diligent with your arthritis treatment as you possibly can be. It is a good idea to speak with your doctor about adding any nutraceuticals to your regimen as well. If the cold is causing you pain, don’t underestimate the power of a nice hot cup of tea.
