A native of New York, Dr. Mallen has been an orthopedic surgeon for 17 years. As a student at New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY, he decided to specialize in orthopedics because he wanted to help people maintain healthy lifestyles (or return to them after an injury.) He continued this commitment throughout his postdoctoral training, which took place in Boston and New York City.
As an expert board-certified orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Mallen has developed a reputation as one of the best hip and knee surgeons in Nassau County. He specializes in hip and knee replacement surgery, but is quick to note that surgery isn’t always the best—or first—course of treatment for everyone.
“I often recommend conservative, non-surgical treatments,” Dr. Mallen says, noting that he may recommend physical therapy, cortisone or PRP injections, bracing, or pain management options first.
“My patients can expect to be treated with dignity and compassion, and to be an active participant in their treatment,” Dr. Mallen says. “This means spending time with patients to truly understand the history of the injury, or the pain, and how it’s affecting their lives, in addition to using imaging technology like X-rays and MRIs.”
And, should a patient require surgery from one of the top orthopedic surgeons on Long Island, Dr. Mallen works with them to develop a conservative surgical plan that has the fastest possible recovery time.
“I offer patients advanced techniques such as partial joint replacement, computer-assisted knee replacement, patient-specific, and customized knee replacement and anterior hip replacement,” Dr. Mallen notes.
Dr. Mallen is also well-known outside the operating room for his commitment to the young people of Long Island. For many years, he coached youth baseball and soccer and served as a Cub Scout leader. He’s also a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and an active member of the Nassau County Medical Society and Medical Society of the State of New York.
