About Gabriel Makar, MD
Dr. Makar is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in adult reconstruction and joint replacement, with a practice focused on primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty. His goal is to help patients reduce pain, restore function, and return to the activities they enjoy through individualized, evidence-based care. He approaches every patient along a spectrum of treatment, beginning with non-operative and conservative measures, progressing through appropriate non-surgical treatment options, and recommending surgery for patients who stand to benefit from it.
Dr. Makar earned his undergraduate degree from Ramapo College of New Jersey and his medical degree from Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania, before completing an Adult Reconstruction fellowship at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute/Tampa General Hospital. There, he trained alongside experienced arthroplasty surgeons and gained extensive experience in complex primary and revision hip and knee replacement.
His clinical practice encompasses advanced techniques in hip and knee reconstruction, including individualized alignment strategies, cementless fixation, and complex revision surgery for patients with previous failed joint replacements. He also has a particular interest in treating patients with complex anatomy and challenging conditions, including developmental dysplasia of the hip, avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head, and congenital or developmental deformities that result in arthritis of the hip or knee.
In addition to his joint reconstruction practice, Dr. Makar treats a broad range of general orthopaedic conditions and fractures. He is passionate about caring for patients across the spectrum of orthopaedic injury and disease, from acute injuries requiring evaluation in the emergency room or hospital setting to chronic conditions managed in the office.
Dr. Makar works closely with each patient to develop an individualized treatment plan based on their symptoms, goals, activity level, and overall health. When surgery is recommended, he works with each patient's broader medical team to optimize their health and minimize potential risks before surgery. His goal is to provide safe, thoughtful surgical care while supporting an efficient recovery and a return to the activities that matter most to each patient.
Dr. Makar is an active researcher in orthopaedic surgery, with a focus on improving outcomes for patients undergoing hip and knee replacement. His research has looked at how to reduce complications, speed up recovery, and identify the best treatment options for patients with complex or difficult cases — including those who have had a previous joint replacement fail or who were born with hip conditions that make surgery more challenging. He has published this work in leading orthopaedic journals and regularly presents his findings to other surgeons at national and international meetings, helping shape best practices across the field. For his patients, this means his approach to care is grounded not just in experience, but in an ongoing effort to find better, safer ways to help people move without pain.
Dr. Makar sees patients at Central Orthopedic Group's offices in Rockville Centre and Massapequa.
He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS).
